| AutoBlockTM
is The Automated HotBlock for Metals Digestions.
The
entire digestion process takes place in a controlled HEPA filtered
environment.
The AutoBlock digests
up to 54 samples simultaneously in accordance with EPA digestion
protocols or a user-designed digestion program. The AutoBlock controls
temperature, ramp rate, digestion time and automatically adds up
to five different reagents during the digestion process. All steps
are performed in a self-contained, HEPA-filtered environment.
The AutoBlock uses a Microsoft* Windows-based PDA (personal desk
assistant) to control all parameters of the digestion process. Stored
in permanent memory of the PDA are programs for EPA 200.2, EPA 200.7,
EPA 200.8, EPA 3050B and EPA 200.8, as well as methods 7470A, 7471
and 245.1 for mercury.
To operate, the analyst
chooses a method, loads samples into the AutoBlock, closes the door
and presses the start button. The AutoBlock dispenses the appropriate
amount of reagent to the samples, lowers them into the heated block
and holds the temperature at the desired level. When the procedure
calls for additional reagents to be added, the AutoBlock lifts the
samples, turns off the heat and cools the samples to <40°C
with HEPA-filtered air. After cooling, reagents are safely added
to the samples. The samples are then lowered, the block heats and
digestion continues. When digestion is complete, the samples are
raised out of the block for cooling and the heat source is turned
off.
With the AutoBlock, the
greatest source of digestion variability, that of the operator,
is eliminated. Digestion temperatures remain uniform from run to
run. Heating times, reagent additions and total digestion times
are automatically timed and performed on schedule. This uniformity
improves productivity and provides consistent results.
